The Problem

The platform handles highly complex engineering data, including multiple well profiles, extensive workflows, specialized documents, and interconnected tasks. Presenting this massive amount of technical information in a standard UI led to a cluttered and confusing experience for engineers.

Users needed to navigate quickly between different contexts (e.g., from a specific well’s data to a broader workflow or task list) without losing their place. The existing navigation and data density made this difficult.

The Solution

I redesigned the interface to focus on clarity, utilizing a structured layout with a prominent sidebar for global navigation and clean, contextual tabs within specific views (like Well Details).

I established clear typographic hierarchy and used appropriate UI components (like improved data tables, clear status indicators, and logical form layouts) to make scanning dense data much easier. Space was utilized efficiently to maximize data visibility without overwhelming the user.

What I Learned

  • Industrial/Enterprise UI requires a deep understanding of the user's specific workflow.
  • Designing for high data density requires strict adherence to alignment, spacing, and typography rules.
  • Standard UI patterns might need adaptation to fit highly specialized engineering use cases.
  • Clear navigation state (knowing where you are in a complex app) is critical for user confidence.
  • Iterative feedback from actual domain experts is essential when designing specialized tools.
